v3
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
The people were trying to use God. They didn't have a real relationship with Him, but they wanted to have and use the things of Him, to help them in their physical situation in the world. God doesn't appreciate it when people do that, so we need to make sure we're honest, repenting from our sins, and not trying to "use" God.
Application
Having the ark without really having the Lord on their side, reminded me of 1 Corinthians 13:
1 Corinthians 13:3And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
When I have conflicts with other people, even if I have understanding and knowledge about the subject, and think I'm really doing what's right in the situation, even that doesn't do any good if I don't have the Lord's love. I'll work on suffering long, being kind, not being proud, not seeking my own benefit, not being easily provoked, thinking no evil, bearing all things, and enduring all things.
