1 John 3 - Key

v17

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Bowels is an unfortunate King James translation, but it meant compassion from someone's innards, or guts, the source of true affection, deep down inside. Now-a-days, we'd say, one's heart, which is just what many other, more recent translations of the Bible say here.

Application

2 Corinthians 9:7
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

When we have plenty of the substance of this world, that other believers are in need of, let's generously give to them, from our hearts.
